It’s the silly season. That means life gets more hectic, stressful and busy. However, this may actually be the best time to make some drastic decisions about your business. This inspired my Enterprise column today.
The end of the year is a great time to clean house in your business. That means getting rid of the little things that have bugged you all year, but that haven’t been enough of a thorn in your side to do anything about.
If you’re anything like me, by the time you get to the end of the year, you’re tired. It can be exhausting running a business. As a result, this can shine a light on the areas of your business that either need to be revamped or removed.
The minor annoyances that you’ve put up with all year can suddenly morph into untenable issues.
It’s like when you put up with a rattle in your car for months. All you need to do is take it to the mechanic but you make all sorts of excuses that you don’t have time to drive there. Or you try to convince yourself that it isn’t that annoying, so it’s not a priority. But, one day, the noise of the rattle annoys you so much that you drop everything, get behind the wheel and make a beeline for the mechanic. He fixes it in five minutes flat and you wonder why you put up with it for so long.
Well, this is the time of year to reflect on the “rattles” in your business. When we’re on the day-to-day treadmill of running our businesses, we put up with so many seemingly small issues that frustrate us. This could include anything from an annoying customer, an archaic filing system or a useless mobile phone provider.
However, a constant stream of frustration – whether large or small – makes it very hard to move forward on the bigger strategies in your business.
So, while you might be about to collapse into end-of-year burnout, use this to your advantage. Let your short fuse guide your instincts on whether you need to revamp or remove certain parts of your business.
