Here I am stranded in Chile.
I’m stuck in Santiago, Chile. This has inspired this week’s Enterprise post on how to make your business volcano-proof.
Who would expect that a volcano in Chile would impact small businesses in Sydney? That’s exactly what has happened this week to me and fellow Australian entrepreneur Suzi Dafnis. Some of you may know that I run the Sydney Writers’ Centre in Milsons Point, Sydney, and Dafnis is community director of the national Australian Businesswomen’s Network.
We are both currently stranded in Santiago, Chile. We’re not even supposed to be here. We were due to fly back from Rio de Janeiro to Sydney, via Buenos Aires in Argentina after attending a conference in Brazil. However, we were re-routed to Chile where we had to hand over our passports at the airport four days ago before playing a waiting game till we find out if we can get a flight home.
Needless to say, this kind of unexpected detour can wreak havoc on a business, particularly if key operations in your business rely heavily on you.
It made me think: can your small business survive the volcano test?
