Watching: Warrior, the movie starring Joel Edgerton as one of two brothers who are pitted against each other in a cage fighting tournament. While I realise many would disagree, for me, this movie has everything going for it. Regular readers will know that I have more than a passing interest in cage fighting. Couple that with a long-held crush on Australian actor Joel Edgerton and, well, this movie just couldn’t go wrong.
While I have never met Joel in real life, I did once have a one-hour phone call with him when I interviewed him for a magazine. This was when he played Owen Lars (stepbrother to Anakin Skywalker, who became Darth Vader) in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Joel will be next seen in The Great Gatsby. Yes, I was professional on the phone call. No, I didn’t embarrass myself by revealing my secret crush.
Listening: To the fantastic bonus audio in our online course in Travel Writing at the Sydney Writers’ Centre. We’ve interviewed some veteran travel writers who have shared their secrets on how to get paid for your travels. And students get access to this exclusive audio in the online classroom.
Buying: Goats, chickens and watering cans. I’m loving the fantastic gifts you can buy through Childfund. They are a wonderful alternative to regular gifts and can make a big difference in the lives of people who really need some help.
Attending: Christmas parties and networking events. The silly season has well and truly kicked off. In the last week, I’ve heard Ray Martin speak at the Network Central lunch in the QVB Tea Rooms; attended the Women’s Network Australia Christmas lunch featuring hilarious etiquette expert Patsy Rowe (who is also one of our writers on Latte magazine); and celebrated the end of the year with the dynamic and gorgeous women from Business Chicks. And the circuit has only just begun!
Planning: How to survive Christmas without a kitchen or a bathroom. We’re renovating, half the house is gutted, I’m frantically picking benchtops, floorboards, paint colour and … going slightly crazy in the process. Watch this space.
Loving: The new Doggie Rescue Calendar. My little dog Rambo came into my life three years ago from Monika’s Doggie Rescue and he’s such a wonderful addition to our family. Monika does amazing work at her no-kill dog shelter and is hoping to raise $75,000 with these gorgeous calendars. You can buy one here.
Feeling: Totally weird seeing myself on the cover of the latest McGrath magazine.
Reading: The Spider Goddess by Tara Moss. If you think that I don’t look like the sort of person who usually read paranormal fiction, you would be correct. However, as I’m interviewing the lovely Tara Moss today, I have been reading her latest book and haven’t been able to put it down. Yes, it’s a far cry from the business books you usually see on my shelves, but I’m loving being transported into another world. This woman knows how to spin a yarn. Pardon the pun.
