Hallelujah! I hate paying payroll tax and I’m even fortunate that most of our staff are in QLD!
It is indeed the Stupidest Tax in the World…

You do wonder what drugs they were on when they invented it.

Agree wholeheartedly! Good ole stupid tax. It’s like training really hard for a sporting event, surrounding yourself with an awesome support team to get you there, winning the event and being presented with a penalty because you you were smart enough to use support staff!

Payroll tax is indeed stupid. There are others. Luxury car taxes and those levied on wines (wine equalisation?) are stupid too as these products already have 10% GST. It gets worse. In the Northern Territory, when I pay an insurance premium, I pay stamp duty to the NT Government and then I pay GST which is calculated on the cost of insurance PLUS stamp duty. So we pay a tax on a tax … it pisses me off. Every time I pay an insurance premium I fax the Chief Minister and bitch about it. Of course, nothing happens.

Well said Valerie. Talk about “cutting the legs off small business”. Small business is encouraged to employ Australian and not be lured into the temptation to outsource. But where is the break so desperately needed? Will this ever be addressed?

I agree, this is the nastiest tax of them all because it’s designed to attack the cash cows of the economy, the big end of small business. It sneaks up on and strikes just as they start to create some scale and are busy hiring people. It should have featured in Dumb and Dumber along with frozen boogers on bikes.
