Last week, my newly married friend emailed me a link to her wedding photos. Apart from viewing her online gallery of pics and noticing how happy she looks, I also noticed another significant change in her persona. Or rather, in her email address.
She had changed her name to take her husband’s surname. And she’d already secured an email address with her new moniker.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with taking your husband’s surname. But I must admit that I was a little surprised. She’s a successful business owner running a service-based organisation that relies heavily on her professional reputation. We’ll call her Sue Smith.
A lot of Sue’s work is the result of word-of-mouth or through people searching for her online. However, in one fell swoop, Sue Smith ceased to exist.
