It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the day-to-day grind of … life! This is especially true if you’re running a business. That’s why it’s so important to remember that creativity is an essential part of success.
Staying creative and inspired can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are five tips you can use to nurture your creativity and keep your business growing strong.
1. Take Breaks
It may feel counterintuitive, but taking regular breaks is one of the best ways to stay energised and productive throughout the day. Step away from your desk every hour or so and take a short walk around the block or grab a cup of coffee with a coworker—you’d be surprised how much this can help rejuvenate your mind. I take regular breaks at my local cafes. Admittedly I bring my laptop so that I can still be productive. While you might think that this doesn’t rank as a “break”, that simple change of scenery can do wonders.
2. Find Inspiration in Nature
Sometimes, the best way to clear your head is by getting out into nature. Take a stroll through a park or explore some trails near you—the fresh air will help kickstart creative thinking and give you some much-needed perspective on any problems you’re struggling with. I’m lucky enough to live near trails, water and the beach. And when I let myself wander at any of these places, it’s not only renewing, most of the time I end up with new ideas.
3. Try Something New
It can be easy to fall into comfortable routines, but that isn't always conducive for creative thinking. Don't be afraid to try something totally new—sign up for an art or writing class, read books outside of your normal genres, or pick up a hobby you've been wanting to try forever. It may not seem like it at first glance, but these activities can actually open up new pathways in your brain which may lead to innovative solutions down the road.
4. Connect With Your Peers
I must admit: even though I know this is important, it’s fallen by the wayside for me in recent years (thanks to the pandemic!). So I’m making it a concerted effort this year to connect with other artists and creative entrepreneurs. When I’ve done this in the past, these connections have invariably sparked creativity and generated problem-solving ideas. The more diverse perspectives you have access to, the better!
5. Write Things Down
For those who know me, it will come as no surprise to you that I think this is vital. When inspiration strikes (which sometimes happens when we least expect it!), make sure that you write things down right away so that those ideas don't slip away unnoticed later on. Even if those ideas don't seem related at first glance, jotting them down will make sure they don't get lost in all the other ideas competing for space in your brain.
In summary
Being creative isn't always easy – especially when life throws curveballs like managing big projects or tackling unforeseen problems – but hopefully these tips will give you the extra boost of motivation needed for coming up with fresh ideas even amidst chaos! So take some time today for yourself – grab some coffee with friends, go explore some local trails, or just sit back & relax – whatever works best for keeping those creative juices flowing!
